Work Package 4

logoWP 4: Biochemical markers (BM) of OA progression and incidence

Participants:

Synarc, KCL, LUMC, Erasmus

Objectives:

  1. To examine the value of established and novel biochemical markers (BM) in the pipeline for joint tissue metabolism to predict OA progression.
  2. To identify genes which contribute to systemic BM levels.
  3. To identify a panel of few BMs to be included in the risk prediction model described in WP-8.

Status:

One of the objectives of WP4 (biochemical markers) was to measure urinary levels of CTX-II (U-CTX-II) and serum levels of COMP (S-COMP) in cohorts of WP1. Measurements of U-CTX-II and S-COMP levels have been performed on 1059 patients of Twin UK study and on 778 patients of Chingford study. U-CTX-II and S-COMP means obtained in these two populations are very similar with the data obtained in our laboratory and with the data previously published (Reijman et al. Arthritis and Rheumatism, 2004; Sharif et al. Arthritis and Rheumatism, 2004). The evaluation of new pipeline biochemical markers is currently in progress.
